54-degree 6 bounce distance?

    I have been using my Vokey 54 as much as possible and was curious if anyone uses that as a sand wedge ever, or is that not enough loft? Also, how far should my ball carry using this club with a full swing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    I have used both 54 and 56 from bunkers with similar results. Technique is key and knowing when a bunker is too deep or shot needs to check up will cause selection to go with 58 or 60 degree wedge. Overall distance on a 54 degree wedge from the fairway depends on the person’s swing speed, just like any other club. You mainly just do not want a large gap between your pitching wedge distance and your first wedge. Many people like to have a 50 to 52 degree gap wedge in their set to avoid the big disparity.     My bag in the thumbnail is pretty efficient. My 9 iron is 39* and my Vokey line up is SM10 46-10F, 56-12D (54*), 60-14K (58*), 60-04T. A 50-08F is “nice to have” but I learned how to work 47-55 (Snake Eyes set P and S) between 2009-2011 with DSG 58 and 64. Played png Eye 2 irons 2011-2012 with Vokey SM2 50-08-F, 58-12M and 64. Between 2012-2015, played AP1 P and SM4 54-11M, 58-06L and 64-07T. My dad passed away in 2015 so I played his Apex irons (and started working AP2 irons in with a Fourteen RM21 42* “black; played SM6 50-08F and 60-12K at 58* with a Callie 64/8).

    I played 695MB 7-P (34-38-42-48) at the start of COVID. Carried a lofted driver, 910F 21, 816H1 27H and my wedge lineup was initially 50-08F (48*), 58-14K (56*) and PM Grind 64. I alternated between the set P and the 50-08F. I actually broke 40.

    I found a better wedge setup in 2021 was 54-10S (52*), 60-14K (58*) and the PM grind 64/10.

    I add a 50-08F to the thumbnail…. Voila! Torrey Pines ready (2nd image). I have 695MB 8 and 9 or Apex Plus 8 and 9 for 14 clubs. Spare Vokeys (SM10 54-10S and 58-12D bent 2* strong for that “traditional setup”, WW 60-06K and SM6 60-12K bent to 58*; I played an SM6 at Torrey Pines South). If I want a “carry bag”, replace the 50-08F and 56-12D with 54-10S and replace the 60-14K and 60-04T with the SM6.

    I had a “shootout” between the 54-10S (52*), 56-12D (54*) and 50-08F. Very minimal distance difference between the F and S grind all around. The D grind was slightly better vs S grind out of thick grass. It also did better on open face shots. Like I mentioned in the quote, the 54-10S (52*), 60-14K (58*) and PM Grind 64/10 has been a solid combination for most conditions. 50-08F and 56-10D (54*) could be a “Torrey Pines” combo. I have been dinkering with T grind and low bounce K. 60-04T has worked on the course.


    D grind and K grind bent 2* strong are proven performers on the golf course. D advantage is open face shots and K works better off firm lies. They’re even in soft bunkers.

    Actually, 60-06K outperforms 60-14K and 60-04T in all conditions. Hits just as well out of soft sand as the K. Also hits better off tight lies vs T grind.

    The only dilemma is whether to use a 50-08F or strong 54-10S (52*). The difference in distance between them is minimal. The S grind cuts like a sickle in thick grass and outdoes the F grind on long bunker shots. I use the F grind more for full swings.

    Your wedges as Bob Vokey says are a part of a distance package....pick the right lofts/clubs for your distances so you do not have any gaps in your clubs....

    The thumbnail today is my basic wedge setup. 46-54-60-64. 56-12D bent to 54*.

    Alternatives are 56-10S bent to 54 with 60–14K and 60-04T bent to 59*. I’ve also played 54-10S bent to 52 as a gap wedge and SM6 60-12K (58*) for sand.
