Hi all- I am looking for a new 58 degree wedge that allows me to open up the face, however having looked at the grind options available in the new range there doesn't seem to be a grind available where the leading edge of the club sits close to the ground. I currently play an sm4 58.09 (apparently s-grind) and the leading edge seems to sit close to the ground on all shots that i wish to play making it very versatile (this is perfect), although it is nearly 3 years old and needs replacing. My concern with the new range is that i wouldn't feel comfortable opening up the face on tight lies due to the high leading edge, also the s-grind is advertised as been a club that should be played square yet it was perfectly versatile in the sm4. I have to say that i find the width of sole on the new m & k grinds to be much too wide, whilst the l grind wont offer enough assistance, where does this leave me, is s-grind the call/versatile enough?

I was actually in the same situation as you up until recently. I was playing a 56* but then realized i needed a 58* so I just had my loft weakened. Although this helped with my yardage gapping it made my open face shots inconsistent. I happened to be in Golfsmith when a Titleist rep was there and he gave me a a 58* with M grind and I was hesitant at first for the same reasons you are and since I was only hitting off mats in store. HOWEVER, I found a used 58* sm5 with L grind the following week and picked it up since I couldn't pass up the deal. Took it out for a test run this past weekend and I have to say...I'm glad I picked it up!! After my first flop shot out of the rough and over a bunker I was hooked!! I would suggest picking up a wedge with the L grind...you won't regret it.

I have been playing 60.07 lob wedges for years. I too was worried about moving to a higher bounce for my lob wedge, but I personally, really liked the idea of the new SM6 K-Grind for so many shots, especially bunker shots and flops from the rough. I thought about it and realized I rarely have to flop from a tight lie. If I just have to do a high pitch over a a bunker or something from a tight lie and can play the face square, it doesn't matter all that much what the bounce is. Since flops from tight lies are so rarely needed I decided on the 58-12 K Grind, which I feel gives me so much more versatility from bunkers, rough and soft wet conditions. For that rare occasion I might use a flop shot from a tight lie, I will find another alternative. Most times, flop shots seem to be needed from rough around the green, more so than from tight fairways. So IMO, having the higher bounce K-Grind gives me many more opportunities to make better shots from the lies I end up in MOST of the time.

So far, I couldn't be happier with my SM6 58.12 K grind choice, even after playing lower bounce 60* lobs wedges for the last 7 or 8 years. I am presently playing the new SM6 wedges in 50.08F, 54.10S and 58.12K. I am considering either a 60 or 62 low bounce to add to the group for that rare occasion I might need it, but the more I think about it, the more I realize it is probably not necessary.
