Hey TT! I am traveling out West this summer for a golf trip and will be taking my clubs with me. Any tips for a first-timer? I haven't purchased a travel cover yet (it's on the list!) and know I should probably purchase a backbone as well but what else should I be thinking about to keep the clubs safe and travel as easy as possible?

I borrowed my friend’s Sun Mtn Meridian golf travel bag and it worked great! I will be purchasing one

Another vote for the Sun Mountain Meridian bag. It has a built-in mechanism that makes it very easy to pull. One thing to consider is the mechanism does add some weight to the bag which may be an issue for some airlines that have weight limits with checked in bags. For me, I don't have a problem storing my Players4 Carbon with 14 clubs and shoes with the Meridian and I can keep it below the 50lb limit.

Highly recommend SKB hard case. Have traveled all over the world with no damage to contents. Easy to maneuver thru Airports. Great customer service.

Which case do you have? Looking at them for Scottsdale and don't know which would best fit. I'm bringing my Players 4 StaDry. Looking at the Deluxe Standard ATA.

I second Chuck's recommendation for the SKB. Lifetime warranty and can take a beating, especially on flights where you have connections and they get loaded and unloaded multiple times. Club Glove (and the ones that have Titleist logos) are the best in soft cases. I have a collegiate version that I use for non-flying road trips and many people prefer them for flying. I have flown with it a few times and the Stiff Arm protects the shafts but TSA has inspected and reloaded the bag a few times with the legs on the side and they have gotten bent. Most airlines also will not insure clubs in soft cases so check your airline's bag policy. I'm sure you will pick what works best for you. Safe travels!

Dale, I know you have a Players 4 bag. I move back and forth between my Players 4 Sta-Dry and the Players 4 Carbon. Which SKB hard case do you use? Thanks!

Just wanted to comment on the SKB lifetime warranty. I bought one of the early SKB cases (over 20 years old). One of the wheels broke off and I emailed SKB. I wasn't expecting much since the bag was so old and there have been different iterations of the bag over the years. To my surprise, they sent me a pair of wheels and I replaced the broken one as well as the functioning one. The case glides like new.

I have a stand bag and use the Club Glove Collegiate travel bag. I take off the driver and 3w heads and put them inside the bag. I also took a tip from the forum here, and put two pvc lengths on the legs of my stand bag, and then my shoes go in the inside pockets. Traveled to UK/Scotland last year this way and several trips domestically.

Second on Ron's. I use a stay dry stand bag, and the Club Gove last bag with the arm, pvc legs support. I haven't taken the heads off the woods but still (so far) had no troubles.

Bag folds up quick n easy when at the location.

Agree with Chuck Z….order the SKB hard case and you won’t regret it. I use a smaller bag when I travel so I ordered the smallest hard case. I can still get my clubs, a towel & shoes in the case.

Good discussion on this thread about the Pros/Cons of a soft vs hard case

  12. I use the Club Glove Collegiate travel bag and remove driver and 3 wood head then put in head covers. Also another tip maybe chunk a airtag in your bag if you are an iPhone user.

Tom Hoge just posted a picture of one of his irons that the shaft was severely bent on his flight home from Augusta. Luckily he has access to the tour truck. If you don't maybe consider the hard case.

+1 on the airtag, makes a lot of sense when traveling with them.

Also, one thing to think about is what do you do with the case when the clubs are not in it. I usually have family with me so space is a premium, hence my preference for a soft case that can fold up smaller vs. the hard case.

I use an AirTag also when I travel, one in my golf bag and one in my suitcase. Positive - you can follow your clubs/bag through the airport and see when they get on the plane…Minus - can be stressful when you are on the plane and your bags are still in the terminal.

It does increase the stress... until that update when they're right underneath you lol! Delta does a good job of letting me know that the bag is on the plane too... but that doesn't make connections any easier!

Folks, I just picked up a Sun Mountain Kube bag, any recommendations on a stiff arm?

The ability to shrink the bag down for storage was too good to pass up. I might cry if my clubs break though.

I bought the stiff arm from Club Glove and that works well.

I have a Sun Mountain Meridian club cover and it glides effortlessly through airports and walkways. I also have a stiff arm - which is a must!

I must admit that I use iron covers only when traveling and I thread a towel in between the clubs for more cushion. I have herd of ppl taking 0ff the heads off their woods and stashing them in there carry-on.
  21. I’m traveling with my clubs for the first time. Unscrew heads from shafts and place in headcover in side pocket! Good luck!
  22. Yeah i always travel with a hard case! Great product

The times I've traveled, I have used SHIPSTIX. You box them up, they take them, and when you get to your destination, they are there. Insurance is an option in case something happens. I think you have less chance of them getting lost or damaged compared to an airline who knows what they are and could care less about how they are treated along the way.
  24. Dale V

    Dale V

I will say I think the extra box helps and the fact that they go "cargo" and not "commercial" airlines avoids the digging in by TSA inspectors. If you have had problems lately like I have with FedEx and UPS delays, know that ShipSticks does not have their own planes. They use the same FedEx, UPS, DHS, handlers as if you went directly to those shipping companies. My point is that you probably want to send them a couple of days early just to make sure they are there when you are ready to play if going that route in lieu of checked baggage. Every method has risks. Always a good idea to have a back up plan in place like knowing where you can get local rentals if needed.
  25. I travel with a Samsonite hard case, many trips a few years ago and lots now as I have returned to golf, lots of different carriers and airports and still no damage to clubs.
Last year took set to US from Sydney and saw the golf bags being thrown onto the conveyer belt to go into the plane, mine just sat there and until it was all clear of golf bags going up sideways and pushed on through afterward like a boss!! I must admit Us domestic carriers and pretty harsh on golf club, very harsh on soft bag covers and even a hard case will get marked but clubs always 100% even with three Scotty's no trouble whatsoever. Happy travels..

Vote for the Club Glove and their luggage "Train System".. Makes lugging the bags easy through the airport and around! If you get a Club Glove look at another color other than black as that s the most popular or change the zipper pulls to a fluorescent color for easy identification.

I use a Club Glove and it’s been great. Careful on a hard shell one. I had one once and we rented a sedan and it wouldn’t fit in the trunk. There were 3 of us each with clubs and mine had to go across someone’s lap in the backseat.

Yep, If we have 3 people on a trip we rent and SUV so at least half the back seat will fold down. For trips with 4 people, a minivan works great. That what we use every year for the Bandon trip. Handles soft and hard cases and luggage for all 4 people. Alone or with 2 people I will rent an intermediate size car and use the back seat for the hard case.

Thanks for the info. I was just thinking about this over the weekend for the TTI. Which SKB case do you have? Looking at the Deluxe Standard ATA for my Players 4 Stadry.
  31. Dale V

The Deluxe should give you plenty of room. I have the smaller, the Standard model and have carried a Players 4 and Players 4 Carbon with no problem but there is not much room for anything else. I can get 2 pairs of shoes and one rain suit and a small toiletries bag in it, up by the club heads. The Deluxe looks like the larger base area would make it easier to have shoes and quite a bit of cold weather gear which will make more room in your suitcase for all the Titleist welcome gifts.

I agree with Ron and JJ above regarding removing club heads; I wrap the heads in towels and put them in the bag pockets. I use an old soft travel bag and added an extendable club protector and have had no issues.

Another vote for the Sun Mountain Clubglider Meridian with a stiff arm. The wheels roll easily and require little effort to guide through the airport. The integrated leg set that, when extended, supports the entire weight of the bag, all travel bags can use this feature.
