I'm 90% sure you'd have to be a guest at the resort in order to play on the courses, but if you can get on at any of the Barton Springs courses (especially Fazio Canyons or Fazio Foothills) I highly recommend doing so. I played them all in late spring this year and they were in great shape, as expected, and tons of fun to play.

Wolfdancer Golf Course is another one I like to play -- it's also a resort course, but it's available to the public. It's actually about 20 miles outside of Austin, but worth fighting the traffic to get to.

However, the absolute BEST, most "Austin-y" courses are Peter Pan Mini Golf (http://peterpanminigolf.com/) and Butler Park Pitch-N-Putt (www.butlerparkpitchandputt.com/). Both have been around longer than your grandparents, and they're perfect if you can't fit in a full 18 but still want to swing the clubs.

If you want to drive maybe 1 1/2 hr tops you can play in San Antonio like the TPC and La Cantera courses.

Lots of great Hill Country golf to be had in and around Austin. As Dr K mentioned, Falconhead is a great track. To play any of the Barton Creek courses as well as TPC in San Antonio you do have to stay at the resort. Have fun and Congratulations to you both on your marriage.

have played Wolfdancer a few years ago and definitely recommend it. I played the Foothills course at Barton Creek as well. the greens were in horrific condition, but the layout is enjoyable. I think that you need to stay on site at Barton Creek to golf there.

I am quite fond of the Lost Pines course at the back of Tahitian Village in Bastrop about 35 miles southeast of Austin on Hwy 71. Beautiful trees, ravines ... just driving the cart through it is a pleasure and the holes are challenging for those of us not ready to go on tour.

If you are able to get on Austin has some great private courses.

-- Austin CC (Dell Match Play)
-- Spanish Oaks
-- Barton Creek (also a resort so you can play if you stay
-- Twin Creeks does not get the run of the others but it is a really good track near Lake Travis in Cedar Park (suburb of Austin)
-- The Hills and Flintrock Falls in Lakeway are both really good.

If you want to get about an hour outside of town Horseshoe Bay on Lake LBJ has multiple great courses. Escondido is also out there which is a pretty new Fazio course and tremendous.

Those two would be the two I would go for as they are a little closer to town than some of the other solid ones.
