My friend Travis and I play about once a week at this Par 3 course that is attached to the Payne Stewart course in Springfield, Missouri. First hole has an elevated green with a shelf in the back. The pin location was down in the front left with the shelf behind the pin. Travis and I had chipped around on the practice area. One of the workers asked us if it was cool to water the green before we go, we said no problem. Waited for him to finish and then went to the tea box. They had all 3 tee colors in the same spot for this particular November Friday. Trav didn’t want to go first so I took a couple practice swings with my sand wedge. Keep in mind my handicap is around 15-18. I step up and hit a low flyer to the left side shelf and starts rolling back down towards the flag. You can’t see the hole because of the elevated green. Trav and I looked at each other and was like yikes, that might be close. Tap in birdie is always welcome. Travis hits and we start walking up to the green. I didn’t see my ball, I started to tell Travis, I don’t see it, it’s not on the green. Travis says “no ****ing way” puts his clubs down and starts running up to the hole. I didn’t even set foot on the green. I was watching for his reaction and he starts going bananas. Then I start going bananas. We freak out and jump up and down. This is my first and only Ace in my entire life. I am very grateful to have had shared the moment with one of my best friends. I’ll never forget it and I retired the ball, signed and dated it immediately. Not to bad for a 33 year old +18 amateur. (Went even for the round in case anyone was wondering, shot a personal best at the same time and shot a 27…yes I lost the -2 from the hole in one )
