How good do you have to be to notice the differences in balls?

  1. Hi everyone. I am pretty new to golf, I only started this year. I only have a couple of rounds under my belt. But I had a blast each time and I'm putting in the work on the range to gradually build up my skill.

And it's working, I'm seeing more of a difference!

But I was just wondering... when will I be able to tell what I like/don't like about a different type of golf ball? I guess right now I have way more experience with range balls because of how new I am. When I've actually played rounds, I just kinda used balls that were gifted to me. All I could really tell was they felt different to range balls... but that was about it.

Do I just need to get better and get more experience and then I'll be able to tell what I like better. What kind of stuff do you look for when you judge whether or not you like the way a golf ball plays?

There will be two main considerations. One will be how the ball “feels” to you. You actually don’t feel the ball but the sound it makes on your clubs equates to the feel you have when hitting it. You already can sense that difference based on your comment about range balls. Sticking with the same ball and getting used to the sound will help you on finesse shots and lag putting. The other consideration is not so noticeable right away but that would be spin. A proper ball fitting will help you select a ball that spins right for you. Some people need more spin for higher flight and better stopping on greens and other people need lower spin for longer flight and control. My advice would be find the ball that has the right spin for you and get used to the feel. Best wishes on your golf journey.
