Is Trufeel really an affordable version of ProV

  1. Stuck in trying to determine "my ball" as I have played many of the Titleist and others. In reviewing the Trufeel ball, I have heard comparisons of them being an affordable version of Pro V with a few minor differences.

I am a 12 handicapper, with my game improving - three years ago I was an 18. I recently broke 80 for the first time with my chipping and putting saving strokes. I am inconsistent on the tee with my bad shot being a high fade causing me to always play the left side. Occasionally I will knock one down the middle with a very small fade at about 260-265.

Rarely do I play the same ball for the entire round, so the price of the Trufeel sure does look enticing. So if the Trufeel is close to the Pro V, then why not.

Tour Soft, Velocity, and Trufeel are all 2 piece with non-urethane covers. By design, they won't spin as much with short irons/wedges. Take a sleeve each of Pro-V1 and a Trufeel and on a slow day, chip, pitch, and full swing with at least 2 wedges (PW/SW for example) with at least 2 balls of each from the same distances. You will need to decide how much the roll-out with each ball will affect your control to get close to the pin and hence scoring.

The best control needs player skill to have strokes that can adjust spin, fresh wedge faces, and a urethane ball. If your wedges are not replaced to keep sharp groves, you may find the 2 balls are close in how they respond. Tour players replace their go-to wedges multiple times during a season to be consistent with their V or X balls.

For sure, playing the same ball has benefits. You need to know how far to expect a ball to travel with X club. For hazards and greens, a surprise short/long distance can cost you strokes. Using the V or Trufeel consistently can minimize that.
  3. I prefer older Pro V1's (which sometimes can be had for around the price of trufeels) to trufeel balls. BUt that's just me. Many people like the Trufeel balls. I don't care for the alignment stamp on them.

With price point being the determining factor in golf ball selection you have made the best decision ever to keep all choices within the Titleist family. At each level I believe they consistently outperform any other brand. Way to go.
