First, Great question.

I think it's important for anyone wanting to score the best they can to ensure they have the best quality equipment out there no matter their age including the golf ball which is the only piece of equipment used on every shot.

I've seen several high school players with 100+ mph swing speeds but with that said, it may also depend on age & ability. Maybe a younger player around 15-16 (Fresh./Soph) with only a few years of playing under their belt may not truly need top of the line but still needs their clubs fitted to them. But probably the older more experienced players I would say they could benefit more from properly fitted higher end equipment.

It takes me back to when I played high school golf our coach before each meet gave us a sleeve of Titleist DT 90 golf balls which was one of the top balls by Titleist at the time. (late 70's)

If the budget is there and they can get around the course reasonably shooting a decent score why not?

My personally opinion is it depends on the players ability.

In high school it may be even more important - unless you are a sub 75 golfer, the high schooler will be forced with several up and down situations in a round.

Chipping and putting will be a premium - a quality golf ball that offers free spin control is the answer.

I have coached varsity golf here in PA for 7 years. I often ask myself this question when the season comes around and I submit for equipment purchase. This is what I think, it depends on the players you're talking about. In HS golf the skill level can be a wide range and not that a Pro V1 can't help a poor player play better, its a matter of can they play a round of golf without losing a sleeve of them and do they even care what ball they use? I have had kids in the past who will play and don't even know what kind of ball they are using!

The older kids and the better players I have coached have used the Pro V1 & X, but they never had a preference of which ones i got for them. The younger players didn't care and more often than not I would come to find they gave their friends or their Dad's the Pro V1's!

The best ball out there is a Titleist Pro V1/X, and i will continue to get them for my HS golf team. I will also get some more cost efficient ball for some of the players who are still learning the game

I am a HS golf coach for the last 15 years and we buy PRO V1Xs. Here is why... First, as Titleist states - swing speed doesn't matter. Second it launches higher so it should be good for even average players. Third, it has less spin off the drive so maybe they will hit it straighter with along with the height. Finally, it spins so they will have the benefit of the ball staying on the green on full shots as well as short pitches and chips.

Titleist gives a nice team discount with an order of 12 dozen or more. My only problem is our school doesn't buy our team balls so I have to pay for them out of my own pocket through my Pro and then the players pay me (hopefully!). We usually purchase 18-24 dozen for our fall season.

You will not put any of your players at a disadvantage playing a premium ball, but you could hurt your better players by playing an inferior ball.

Does Titleist have a program where they donate ProV1's to high schools?

I played golf in high school (late 80's early 90's) and we all had balls we liked, but when it came down to it, you used what you had. Even today, there is probably a mix of serious kids who think they are PGA bound, and kids who really like to golf and are just out there for fun. I especially don't see the later group spending $50 every few weeks for a dozen new ProV1's. So, it's probably important, but not realistic without help from parents or directly from Titleist.

When I was in high school about 10 years ago we had Pro V1s for varsity and DT-solo's for JV. Most of the JV team was still learning and went through balls at a faster clip. We weren't obligated to use the Pro Vs in matches but most of us did.

I think if you intend on playing your best you need to have a good ball in your bag. Play one that fits your game and hopefully it is a Titleist. I am sure that your coach will put you with the correct ball. Stick with one ball for consistency.

If it were me I would get a selection of Titleists and have each person fitted for the correct ball and assign them to each player.
