Test Balls - still not durable enough

    Received the little white box in the mail last week, played Friday.

    On my 3rd hole, I had 95 yards in and hit my 56 degree vokey.

    The ball hopped and stopped, didn't get the usual spin expected from the ProV1x.

    The disappointing part was the scuff left on the ball after the wedge shot.  It's the same issue I have with the current ProV1x.

    It's the mix of getting the soft feel and distance matched with a more durable cover. 

    I have a friend that switches out his new ProV's to old battered ones when he had wedge shots in due to the same reason, friendly matches of course :-)

    I still love the ProV1x and won't switch, just wanted to provide my honest opinion on the new test balls.

    I had the opposite experience. I thought this was the most durable ProV1 yet. (However, I received the standard ProV1, not the X version, which I believe has a softer cover). Just curious: are your wedges conforming? My old Vokeys would shred any ball, but after switching to the SM4, I stopped shredding the covers of the balls.

    Not sure if my wedges are conforming.  I've had them for 5+ years so they are not up to date with the latest technology.

    I appreciate the info, I will start looking into the SM4 today!

    I found the new test balls to be more durable with great feel and great spin.  And as usual, there's no other ball like a ProV1 for distance control from one sleeve to the next and dozen after dozen.  They're without a doubt the most consistent ball in the game.

    I have played 90 holes with just one of the new balls and it is still going strong

    I found the test ball (I had a black-numbered ball) to be the most durable edition of the ProV1 series yet. During my tests, I hit a number of full Vokey wedges and did not score the ball at all—and I still received plenty of spin.

    My current 2013/2014 ProV1x usually scores (3 small cover slices) on the same shot. Hopefully the new cover finds its way into next years ProV1 series.

    I have been blessed twice in the past being selected to test Titleist golf balls but I am not a tester for the current balls. My question is how do you know the test balls are ProV1's or ProV1x's ? Are you assuming that is what they are due to similar playing characteristics ? Just curious. I last tested the two ball sleeves of balls with black squares and black circles. In my opinion these balls were a lot better than the current ProV1's and x's and have no clue what they were. If I knew I would buy a bunch of them.

    To me my feeling is like they are a hybrid cross between the Pro V 1 and 1x. A little firmer on driver through the long irons. Similar spin and feel of a Pro V 1 hit with wedges and around the green. Love the durability. I am down to two of three because I was so impressed I gave one away to a friend who is a scratch golfer. I am really considering cutting one in half to see how they are made?? Sure wish I could get my hands on just a couple more (hint). Love 'em.

    I had the exact same observation. It was certainly interesting playing the black test ball along side my current ProV1x. I also loved the ball and would like to try the red-numbered test ball.

    Hi Carl,

    I determined which ball I had by closely comparing the dimple patterns and the color of the number. My test ball clearly matched the ProV1 in appearance and dimple pattern. The ProV1x has a larger dimple pattern and a red number. Performance wise the test ball definitely had "ProV" characteristics ... And I doubt that Titleist is adding a 3d ProV into the mix, but you never really know. ;)
