After 45 regular-season tournaments and three Playoff events, we've reached the zenith of the 2016-2017 PGA TOUR season, as the crowning event in the FedExCup Playoffs is underway this week at the TOUR Championship.
Over the course of the last month, a playoff field that started with 120 players has been pared down to 30, all of whom now have a chance to capture the season-long FedExCup crown with a TOUR Championship victory.
The favorite to take home all the marbles this year is Titleist Brand Ambassador Jordan Spieth (Pro V1x). Spieth currently sits in the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup points standings (which were readjusted after the BMW Championship) and he's looking to become just the second player in history to win two FedExCup titles. Spieth, the 2015 FedExCup champion, fired a 3-under-par 67 in the opening round at Eastlake GC, but noted that a good start is not necessarily the most important factor as we come down to the wire.
"If you get off to a great start, great," said Spieth, "but you get into the thick of things here on the weekend and it takes a lot out of you. Mainly at this point it's conserving energy. [In] 2014 and 2016, especially 2014 I remember being completely worn out by the time I got to the Tour Championship. But things feel good. If it were a major championship I would be very pleased with where things are."
At last year's TOUR Championship the front and back nine holes were reversed on Eastlake's par-70, 7, 362-yard layout, resulting in a dramatic finish that prompted tournament officials to make the change permanent. With it's finishing stretch of risk/reward holes and ideal scoring conditions (20 players recording scores under par on Thursday), the stage has been set for another thrilling conclusion to the PGA TOUR season.
Good luck to all of #TeamTitleist in Atlanta!
